  • Asus ROG Phone 8 Pro

The ROG Phone 8 Pro launched in India in January 2024 at Rs 99,999 for 16 GB plus 512 GB. Asus redesigned the series to look and feel more like a normal flagship, slimming the body, adding IP68 water resistance for the first time on a ROG phone and introducing a camera gimbal, while keeping the gamer-focused AniMe Vision mini-LED panel on the back.

The 6.78-inch LTPO AMOLED runs at up to 165Hz in games and drops to 1Hz when idle. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 is the fastest Android chip of its generation, supported by effective cooling, AirTrigger ultrasonic shoulder buttons and an optional AeroActive Cooler accessory. Asus kept a 3.5 mm headphone jack, a rarity among 2024 flagships.

The camera system improved substantially, with a 50 MP gimbal-stabilised main sensor, a 13 MP ultrawide and a 32 MP 3x telephoto. The 5500 mAh battery delivers excellent endurance with 65W wired and 15W wireless charging. Against the Galaxy S24 Ultra and iQOO 12, it is the clear choice for serious mobile gamers, though its cameras are not quite class-leading.

  • Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold

Google brought the Pixel 9 Pro Fold to India in August 2024 at Rs 1,72,999 for 16 GB plus 256 GB, the first Pixel foldable sold in the country. It abandoned the short, wide shape of the original Pixel Fold for a taller design whose 6.3-inch cover screen feels like a normal phone, and an 8-inch inner display that is the largest on any foldable of its year.

The inner LTPO OLED and the cover screen both run at up to 120Hz with high brightness. The phone is thin when open and uses Tensor G4 with 16 GB of RAM, enough for multitasking and Gemini features. Software support for split screen and the taskbar is good, though the Galaxy Z Fold 6 offers more refined multitasking tools and Snapdragon performance.

Cameras are a step below the slab Pixel 9 Pro: a 48 MP main, a 10.5 MP ultrawide and a 10.8 MP 5x telephoto, still producing reliable Pixel results. The 4650 mAh battery lasts a day, though charging is slow at 21W. Against the Z Fold 6 it offers a more usable cover screen and better camera processing, but loses on performance and the IP rating, which is only IPX8.

  • Google Pixel 9 Pro XL

The Pixel 9 Pro XL launched in India in August 2024 at Rs 1,24,999 for 16 GB plus 256 GB. It is the large-screen version of the Pixel 9 Pro and the successor to the Pixel 8 Pro, positioned against the Galaxy S24 Ultra and iPhone 16 Pro Max. The flat aluminium sides and rounded corners make it more comfortable than its size suggests.

Its 6.8-inch LTPO OLED runs at 1344 x 2992 and up to 120Hz, with excellent brightness and colour accuracy. Tensor G4 and 16 GB of RAM drive Gemini Live, Pixel Screenshots, Add Me and Magic Editor. As with earlier Tensor phones, sustained gaming performance and heat management are behind Qualcomm's best, but the phone feels quick in daily use.

Cameras are identical to the smaller Pro: a 50 MP main, 48 MP ultrawide, 48 MP 5x telephoto and a 42 MP selfie camera, all capable of excellent results, with Video Boost for cloud-processed footage. The 5060 mAh battery is the largest in the 2024 Pixel line, charging at up to 37W with a compatible adapter. The S24 Ultra counters with the S Pen and 10x zoom.

  • Google Pixel 9 Pro

For the first time Google offered its Pro-tier Pixel in a compact size. The Pixel 9 Pro was announced for India in August 2024 at Rs 1,09,999 for 16 GB plus 256 GB, sharing the 6.3-inch footprint of the regular Pixel 9 while adding the telephoto camera, a sharper LTPO screen and more memory. It competed directly with the iPhone 16 Pro.

The Super Actua LTPO display runs at 1280 x 2856 and up to 120Hz, with very high peak brightness. Tensor G4 with 16 GB of RAM handles Gemini Nano and Google's AI suite smoothly, though gaming performance and efficiency still trail Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 and Apple's A18 Pro. The polished frame and matte glass back give it a premium feel.

Its triple camera, with a 50 MP main, 48 MP ultrawide and 48 MP 5x telephoto, is among the most consistent of its year, and the 42 MP selfie camera with autofocus is a big step up for video calls and group shots. The 4700 mAh battery lasts a day with 27W charging. For buyers wanting a small phone with a top-tier zoom camera, few alternatives existed on Android.

  • Google Pixel 8 Pro

Google launched the Pixel 8 Pro in India in October 2023 at Rs 1,06,999 for 12 GB plus 128 GB, putting it in the same bracket as the iPhone 15 Pro and Galaxy S23 Ultra. It moved to a flat 6.7-inch display, a matte glass back, and introduced a temperature sensor, a curious extra that saw little real-world use.

The Super Actua LTPO OLED is one of the brightest displays of its year, running between 1 and 120Hz. Tensor G3 brings on-device AI features including Video Boost, Magic Editor and Best Take, though it remains behind Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 and Apple A17 Pro in graphics performance and efficiency. Seven years of updates make it a long-term proposition.

The camera system was upgraded to a 50 MP main, 48 MP ultrawide and 48 MP 5x telephoto, with Pro controls for manual settings. Image quality is excellent across lenses, especially in low light. The 5050 mAh battery gives a full day, charging at 30W wired and supporting wireless. Its high Indian price was the biggest obstacle compared with the S23 Ultra.

  • Google Pixel 7 Pro

The Pixel 7 Pro launched in India in October 2022 at Rs 84,999 for 12 GB plus 128 GB, taking on the Galaxy S22 Ultra and iPhone 14 Pro. It was Google's most complete phone up to that point, refining the bold camera-bar design of the Pixel 6 Pro with a polished aluminium finish and a slightly less aggressive curve to the display.

The 6.7-inch LTPO OLED runs at a sharp 1440 x 3120 with a variable 120Hz refresh rate. Tensor G2 is quick in everyday use and excels at speech recognition and image processing, though it trails Snapdragon rivals in gaming and efficiency. Android 13 here felt fluid, with exclusive features such as Call Screen, Recorder transcription and Photo Unblur.

The triple camera, with a 50 MP main, a 12 MP ultrawide with autofocus for macro shots and a 48 MP 5x telephoto, is among the best of its year. Super Res Zoom stays usable well beyond 10x. The 5000 mAh battery lasts a day, though charging at 23W is slow. Against the S22 Ultra it lacks the S Pen and 10x lens but matches it on overall photo quality.

  • Motorola Razr 50 Ultra

The Razr 50 Ultra launched in India in July 2024 at Rs 99,999 with 12 GB of RAM and 512 GB of storage, competing head-on with the Galaxy Z Flip 6. Motorola enlarged the cover display to 4 inches, wrapping it around the cameras for the largest outer screen on any flip phone at the time, and added IPX8 water resistance after the IP52 of its predecessor.

The 6.9-inch inner LTPO pOLED and the cover panel both run at up to 165Hz. The Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 is quick and runs cool in the slim body. Motorola also leaned into AI, with Google Gemini usable directly from the cover screen and several Moto AI features for photos and summaries.

The camera pairing is unusual: a 50 MP main sensor with OIS and a 50 MP 2x telephoto instead of an ultrawide, which favours portraits over landscapes. The 4000 mAh battery with 45W wired and 15W wireless charging is an improvement on the 40 Ultra. Against the Z Flip 6, it offers a bigger cover screen and more storage, while Samsung counters with longer update support.

  • Motorola Razr 40 Ultra

When the Razr 40 Ultra launched in India in July 2023 at Rs 89,999, its 3.6-inch outer display was its biggest talking point. It ran full apps, not just widgets, which made the phone genuinely usable while closed and forced Samsung to respond with a larger cover screen on the Galaxy Z Flip 5 the same month.

The main 6.9-inch foldable pOLED refreshes at up to 165Hz, the fastest of any foldable then, and the cover screen manages 144Hz. The Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 was a generation old but still fast and cooler-running than the 8 Gen 1. The hinge folds completely flat with no gap, and the phone feels compact and sturdy in the pocket.

Compromises sit in the cameras and battery. A 12 MP main and 13 MP ultrawide produce good but not flagship-level photos, though the big cover screen makes rear-camera selfies easy. The 3800 mAh battery with 30W charging needs careful management on heavy days. It undercut the Z Flip 5 on price at launch while offering a more capable outer display.

  • OnePlus Open

OnePlus entered the foldable market in October 2023 with the Open, priced at Rs 1,39,999 for 16 GB and 512 GB. Co-developed with Oppo, it was praised for its light weight, almost invisible crease and a cover screen with a normal phone aspect ratio, which made it far more usable when closed than Samsung's narrow Galaxy Z Fold5.

The inner 7.82-inch 2K LTPO AMOLED and the 6.31-inch cover display both refresh at 120 Hz and are very bright. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 is fast and efficient, and OxygenOS includes Open Canvas, a clever multitasking system for running several apps at once. The triple camera system pairs a 48 MP main, a 48 MP ultrawide and a 64 MP 3x telephoto, and it is one of the best on any foldable. The 4,805 mAh battery charges at 67 W.

Its main rival was the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold5, which offered IPX8 water resistance, wireless charging and S Pen support. The Open countered with a better camera, a more practical cover screen and faster charging at a lower price. Its IPX4 rating and lack of wireless charging were the main compromises.

  • Xiaomi 15 Ultra

Xiaomi brought the 15 Ultra to India in March 2025 in a single 16 GB and 512 GB configuration, priced above most Android rivals and pitched less as an all-rounder than as a camera you can make calls on. The Leica co-branding, the large circular camera island and the optional photography grip kit all push the same message: this phone is for people who shoot a lot and care about how the files look.

Under the glass sits the Snapdragon 8 Elite, which handles games, 4K video and heavy multitasking with ease, and a 6.73-inch LTPO AMOLED panel at 1440p that is bright and accurate. The rear array is the real story: a 1-inch type main sensor, a 50 MP ultrawide, a 50 MP 3x telephoto and a 200 MP periscope at roughly 4.3x. The Indian unit uses a 5,410 mAh silicon-carbon cell with 90 W wired and 80 W wireless charging.

Against the Galaxy S25 Ultra it gives up the S Pen and Samsung's seven-year update promise, but its main camera and long-zoom detail are generally stronger, especially in low light. The Vivo X200 Pro is its closest rival on imaging and costs less. Buyers who mostly want a fast phone with a good camera will find the OnePlus 13 far cheaper; the 15 Ultra makes sense only if photography is the priority.
