  • The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People

Stephen R. Covey argues that lasting success comes from character rather than from technique or image. He calls this the character ethic and contrasts it with the quick-fix personality ethic that dominated twentieth-century success literature. The book asks readers to examine the paradigms, or mental maps, through which they see the world before trying to change their behaviour.

The seven habits are arranged as a maturity path. The first three, about proactivity, beginning with the end in mind and putting first things first, build private victory and independence. The next three, thinking win-win, seeking first to understand and synergy, describe public victory and working well with others. The seventh, sharpening the saw, is about renewal of body, mind, heart and spirit.

Covey illustrates his ideas with family anecdotes, consulting stories and tools such as the time-management matrix that sorts tasks by urgency and importance, and the emotional bank account for relationships. Decades after publication the vocabulary of the book, from personal mission statements to circles of influence, is still used in corporate training and leadership programmes worldwide.
