  • The Alchemist

Santiago is a young shepherd in Andalusia who keeps dreaming of treasure buried near the Egyptian pyramids. A fortune teller and then a mysterious old king encourage him to pursue what the book calls a Personal Legend, the thing a person is truly meant to do. He sells his flock and crosses to North Africa, where he is robbed on his very first day.

Working for a crystal merchant in Tangier, joining a caravan across the Sahara and stopping at a desert oasis, Santiago meets a series of teachers. An Englishman studies alchemy from books, a young woman named Fatima offers love, and a powerful alchemist teaches him to read omens and understand the language of the world. Each stage tests whether he will settle for comfort or keep going.

Coelho writes in a simple, parable-like style, closer to a fable than a conventional novel. Originally published in Portuguese in Brazil to little notice, it later became one of the best-selling books in history, translated into scores of languages. Fans treasure its encouragement to follow one's dreams; critics find it thin. Either way it is a fixture of inspirational reading.
